25% of people regret their tattoo (or tattoos). Whether you outgrew something you loved when you were younger, or a relationship ended, or you acted on impulse and wished you didn’t, once you don’t want your tattoo anymore, getting it removed quickly and effectively can become very important. We provide laser tattoo removal for guests who are ready to take this step and get rid of their tattoos for good.

What is laser tattoo removal?

Laser tattoo removal is a treatment designed to remove tattoos, completely, from the skin. We use a laser to help break up the ink particles so that your body can naturally dispose of the ink and regrow fresh, rejuvenated skin.

A specific wavelength of laser energy is directed at the pigment in the tattoo, which absorbs the energy and then breaks into smaller pieces, treatment by treatment, until the particles are small enough for the body to break them down and remove them naturally with the lymphatic system.

What should I expect during my laser tattoo removal?

We will start with a consultation to help ensure any questions you may have are fully answered and you feel comfortable, know what to expect, and are fully prepared.

Before we begin, we will apply a numbing cream to the area to ensure the treatment is not painful for you. We will give you protective glasses to wear to shield your eyes from the laser. We will then apply the laser directly to the tattooed area of your skin. Tattoo ink rests below the skin surface, and the laser targets the ink below the skin. The ink particles will begin to absorb the laser energy, which will cause the ink particles to begin breaking apart into smaller ink particles without breaking the surface of the skin.

Once the ink particles are dispersed by the laser, they are processed by your body’s natural disposal system and flushed away.

Recovery after laser tattoo removal

Your treatment may include some discomfort depending on the size of the tattoo and what part of the body the tattoo is on, but patients generally report they are tolerable. The numbing cream helps to ease discomfort as well.

There is no downtime after your treatments. You can return to your usual activities or work right away. However, your skin may feel sunburned for several days after your laser tattoo removal treatment. Expect redness, tenderness, and swelling, which typically subside within a day or two. Blisters, bruising, and scabs may also appear within 24 hours of treatment. These may take a week or more to heal.

You can use ice packs wrapped in cloth and apply aloe vera to the skin to help ease discomfort and side effects as your skin heals from the treatment. During this time period, avoid hot showers, baths, saunas, and hot tubs.

After three days, you may begin using unscented lotion on the treated area. Apply this daily, as frequently as you like, for a week. In addition to helping your skin heal, the lotion will help prevent you from scratching itchy skin, which can irritate it.

Aftercare tips

  • Don’t expose the treated area to the sun.
  • If crusting is evident, avoid shaving.
  • Avoid scratching or rubbing.
  • Avoid immersing in water.
  • If irritation occurs, apply a thin layer of Aquaphor.

How many sessions are required to completely remove the tattoo?

The number of treatments required for optimal results depends on the size, location, depth, age, color, amount of ink, and the method used to tattoo. Usually, professional tattoos require 6-12 treatments (or more if newer), spaced approximately 6-12 weeks apart.

Your sessions will be spaced six to eight weeks apart, which allows your skin to properly process the treatment. The sessions are short, lasting between 10-20 minutes.

Will tattoo removal leave a scar?

Done correctly and followed up with proper aftercare, there should be no scarring on the skin where the tattoo was removed.

Can you revise a tattoo instead of removing it completely?

Yes. We can remove or fade part of the tattoo if you would like to have it revised or given a cover-up later by your tattoo artist. We can also revise your tattoo by selectively removing only a part of a larger piece, such as a name you no longer want in a tattoo that includes art you want to keep.

Will my cover-up tattoo take longer to erase?

Yes. Because of the amount of ink applied with the double tattoo, the length of time required to break it up and dissolve it is longer.

If I got a tattoo done outside of a professional shop, will that affect my treatment time?

Professionally-done tattoos generally take longer to erase, as the equipment used was usually more advanced.

Is older or newer ink easier to remove?

Old ink is easier to get rid of. Newer tattoos might need more sessions.

Is a red, yellow, or green color harder to remove?

Yes, these colors are generally more difficult to remove and require more treatments, and might not fully dissolve.

Can I get another tattoo on the area that the old one was removed from?

Yes, but the area must be fully healed. Eight weeks is usually the minimum time you should wait before getting a new tattoo.
