What You Should Know About Acne Treatment

There are several effective acne treatment methods to improve the skin’s appearance and prevent future breakouts. These treatments reduce oil production and increase the speed of skin-cell turnover to prevent new blemishes from developing. They also reduce inflammation.

Topical creams are often the first form of treatment used to treat acne, and moderate cases of acne can often be treated with prescription oral antibiotics, which reduce bacteria and inflammation. They are often combined with topical treatments. If topical treatments and oral medications don’t work for you, we provide more in-depth acne treatments. This includes procedures for acne scarring.

Our treatments include BBL® acne therapy, Morpheus8™, chemical peels, DermaSweep™, the DermaSweep Peel, and the vampire facial. Multiple sessions and combination therapy are often key to getting rid of acne or acne scarring.

Many patients experience effective results from these treatments and are able to enjoy smoother, healthier skin and reduction of acne scars. Depending on your specific case, it may take up to eight weeks before results from your acne treatment are apparent. It’s also good to be aware that your acne may get worse before it gets better.

What causes acne?

Acne develops when pores become clogged, either from an overproduction of oil, a buildup of bacteria, or a shedding of dead skin cells. When oil, bacteria, or dead skin cells build up in the hair follicle, they form a soft plug that forces the follicle wall to bulge and protrude from the skin, causing a lesion. The cause of excess oil production is unknown, but is believed to involve a combination of several factors including hormones, bacteria, heredity, and — in some cases — the use of certain medications.

What triggers acne flare-ups?

Acne flare-ups can result from hormonal or environmental triggers such as pregnancy, menstrual periods, high levels of humidity, using oily cosmetics or hair products, and taking certain medications.

What is the best way to prevent acne breakouts?

Although acne cannot always be prevented, there are certain ways to reduce the risk of breakouts. These methods include avoiding heavy or oily cosmetics; removing makeup before going to bed; using mild cleansers; avoiding sun exposure, and avoiding constant touching of the skin. Avoiding picking or squeezing blemishes is also helpful — as is being very aware of anything that comes into contact with the affected area, as it may contain unwanted bacteria. This can include pets, phones, oily hair, etc.
