Sculptra: Restore and Revitalize

Available for cosmetic use since 2009, Sculptra is an injectable facial treatment that volumizes the skin and stimulates the regeneration of your own collagen. It works subtly and gradually over time to give you a more youthful-looking appearance.

As a poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra is strikingly different. Rather than working topically (such as over-the-counter products) it works with your body’s deep dermis to help revitalize collagen production and restore your skin’s inner structure and volume.

As the PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help encourage collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin to slowly increase the facial volume, which results in a decrease in the appearance of wrinkles and folds.

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra helps encourage your body’s own natural collagen production. This means that your skin experiences rejuvenation to its inner structure and an increase in facial volume that has been lost due to aging and illness.

Who is Sculptra For?

If you’re in the Bakersfield area and you’re considering Sculptra treatments, it may be the ideal treatment for your needs. Most individuals who are over the age of 18 and are interested in creating new collagen to achieve more volume are great candidates. However, Sculptra is not recommended for those who:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Take blood thinners, aspirin, other anti-inflammatories
  • Have autoimmune issues
  • Have active skin outbreaks, redness, or rashes
  • Are prone to keloid formation

What You Can Expect with Sculptra

We will apply a topical anesthetic before your Sculptra treatment, and then the injections will be administered just beneath the skin. The treatments usually take 30 minutes, and most patients undergo 3-4 sessions (scheduled six weeks apart).

Although some Sculptra patients report redness, swelling, discomfort, and bruising, these side effects are temporary and mild, typically subsiding within 1-3 days.

Results from Sculptra build gradually over a few months, with final results visible at 4-6 months after the very first treatment. 80% of users were still satisfied with their treatment results 25 months after their last injection.

A Little Mythbusting: Why Traditional Methods Don’t Work

  • FALSE: Traditional treatments claim to deliver collagen that penetrates the dermis.
FACT: Collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed by the skin. Instead, traditional collagen creams and gels contain moisturizers and vitamins that can temporarily improve the skin’s appearance.
  • FALSE: Collagen dietary supplements claim to facilitate the production of collagen within the body.
FACT: Collagen is a protein that is broken down by the digestive system when ingested. Results for these types of treatments are inconclusive.
  • FALSE: Many products claim to tighten skin through the use of exotic plants from overseas.
FACT: There are cosmetic ingredients you can put on your skin to make it feel tighter, yet that’s just your misperception. They are really just mundane ingredients such as egg whites, serum albumin, and polyvinyl alcohol.
  • FALSE: A lot of over-the-counter products claim to be registered, FDA-approved, or otherwise have some sort of large oversight.
FACT: The law doesn’t require cosmetic companies to register with the FDA — or to submit their labeling, product, ingredients, or claims to the FDA for approval. The only exception is if there are color additives, which must be FDA-approved.
