What is BOTOX?

Smooth, sexy, and confident: that’s how BOTOX makes you feel. There’s a reason it’s a household name. As the most well-known and popular treatment in the world for reducing facial lines and wrinkles, BOTOX is also one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments; therefore, it is known and highly trusted by aesthetic providers. The safety and efficacy of Botox have been evaluated in Allergan-sponsored clinical trials as well as countless peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals. BOTOX contains tiny amounts of a highly-purified botulinum toxin protein. Injecting BOTOX into the muscles that cause facial lines and wrinkles temporarily reduces the activity of those muscles, which results in a reduction of the appearance of those lines. The result? Skin that is smoother and more youthful.

What to Expect After Your BOTOX Treatment?

Botox requires very minimal downtime or recovery, and is often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure”. You will be able to go about your normal routine immediately after you leave your treatment.

After discussing your treatment goals, we will perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you. Botox injections are administered with a small, fine needle directly into the muscles. Some say that being injected with Botox feels like a pinch, but most patients report very little discomfort.

Although there will be some physical restrictions after your treatment, most Botox patients can go back to their regular day. You’ll need to avoid the following:

  • Lying down (for four hours)
  • Strenuous activities (for 48 hours)
  • Flying (for 48 hours)
  • Tanning of any kind (for 48 hours)
  • Excessive heat (for 48 hours)
  • Putting pressure on your face (for one week)
  • Undergoing other facial cosmetic procedures (for two weeks)

The longevity of your results will depend on the strength of your muscles, as well as the severity of your wrinkles. The average length of time that Botox lasts is three months, although results always vary in how long they last.

The Science Behind BOTOX

Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes that can occur over time, reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals in the sun and the environment. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. Botox targets these repeated muscle contractions, working beneath the skin’s surface and targeting the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet.

For crow’s feet, we inject areas of the orbicularis oculi (the muscle that frames the side of the eye). Injections will be repeated on the orbicularis oculi muscle on the other eye. Injecting Botox into the muscles that cause crow’s feet temporarily reduces the activity of those muscles. The result is a reduction in the appearance of those lines.

For frown lines, we will administer five injections into the muscles in the forehead: one in the procerus muscle, and four in the corrugator muscles.

Will Botox injections make me look “frozen”?

Botox is a technique-sensitive treatment. You should not lose the ability to show expression when you’re treated by a licensed, trained, and medical professional in facial anatomy.

I’m worried about looking too different. Will I?

Again, if performed by a licensed, trained, and medical professional in facial anatomy, Botox will not overly change your appearance. You’ll still look like yourself — only with less noticeable frown lines and crow’s feet.

What are the potential side effects or risks associated with Botox?

Yes, potential side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site. Rarely, headaches, drooping eyelids, or a frozen facial expression may occur.

What is the average cost of Botox treatments and are they covered by insurance?

The average cost of Botox treatments ranges from $200 to $600 per session. Typically, insurance does not cover cosmetic procedures like Botox unless there is a medical necessity.
